Music at St. Andrew’s Presents Mardi Gras 2015
Ken Whiteley & Friends to Lead Third Annual Singalong
Canadian roots-music icon Ken Whiteley and his family and friends will raise the roof in a joyous evening of singalong music at St. Andrew’s Church on February 13. Mardi Gras 2015, presented by Music at St. Andrew’s, is the church’s third annual Mardi Gras singalong. This year’s program will feature Just a Closer Walk with Thee, Oh Happy Day, Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho, When the Saints Go Marching In and other gospel favourites, swing spirituals and popular hymns. Lyrics will be provided for the singalong portions.
Mardi Gras 2015 promises to be a real family affair: Ken Whiteley will be joined by his son Ben on upright bass and by his brother Chris (seven-time Maple Blues Awards winner) on trumpet and vocals. Sisters Ciceal and Amoy Levy will add their sweet gospel harmonies to the mix. Toronto jazz pianist and bandleader Jordan Klapman, who’s organized all of St. Andrew’s four Mardi Gras concerts since 2009, has assembled an outstanding back-up band for Mardi Gras 2015. The band, led by Jordan Klapman on piano, will feature veteran reedman Tom Skublics on saxophone and clarinet, jazz trombonist and National Jazz Award nominee William Carn, and iconic drummer Bucky Berger of Fathead, who’s up for best drummer at the 2015 Maple Blues Awards.
The concert will be followed by a reception with Mardi Gras-themed treats. Tickets are $25 or $20 each for groups of five or more. Bring your friends and family! Purchase advance tickets atstandrewstoronto.org or at the door (credit card/cash.) St. Andrew’s Church is located at King and Simcoe Streets, opposite Roy Thomson Hall. Nearest TTC station is St. Andrew.
